Ian Hunter studied at Scarborough School of Art and Leicester College of Art and Design, and then worked at Art Schools and Universities in Luton, Guildford, Farnham, Wisconsin, Falmouth, Cheltenham (Head of Fine Art), Central Saint Martins (Dean of Art) and Winchester (Head of Fine Art).

The paintings and drawings of Ian Hunter were the subject of a major solo exhibition at NAG in 1983, while he was teaching at Falmouth College of Art. A photograph of the poster created for the event is featured, p151, in Hardie (1995).

Latterly he has devoted himself exclusively to his own drawing and painting, and since 1999 has lived and worked in Spain.
He has exhibited widely in the UK, including the RA, the Barbican and the Hayward Gallery. He is a member of Asociacion Espanola de Pintores y Escultores, and Andalucian International Artists.
